Chapter 25: The Announcement

Nico didn’t bother calling ahead for an appointment. His grandfather had sprung this whole crazy scheme on him unannounced; he considered it poetic justice to surprise him with the news of his engagement.

He marched into the reception area of his grandfather’s office, Rebecca clutching his arm nervously and staring with wide eyes at her surroundings. Nico kept his office and reception room fairly simple, all things considered. It wasn’t stark, but it was minimalist.

Leopold Vann, on the other hand, apparently liked elegance. His reception room looked like a museum, with gold wallpaper, crown moldings, and heavy wood stands holding expensive knickknacks on either side of plush velvet settees. It wasn’t garish or gaudy, but the room fairly exuded wealth.

“Hello, Eva,” Nico said, greeting his uncle’s receptionist pleasantly. “Is my grandfather available?”
