Chapter 39: Day of Reckoning

Nico stared at his laptop screen and heaved a sigh. He really couldn’t put off leaving for much longer. It was nearly six PM on Christmas Eve and the office was deserted. Gloria had left hours ago, and so had all of the other staff who’d come in today.

He only had busywork available to him anyway. The holidays were typically slow, given that so many people took time off or went on vacation this time of year. No one else seemed to live and breathe work quite like he did.

He supposed Rebecca was already at his grandfather’s estate with her mother and sister. He hadn’t seen her in days, but that wasn’t unusual, recently, given the hours he’d been working. He was gone before she got up for the day and didn’t return to the condo until after she had retired to bed for the night.

She kept the guest bedroom door locked when she was in there. He’d tried it late at night, once, just to see. He wasn’t sure what he’d done if he’d found it unlocked. Nothing, probably.
