Chapter 49

Early the following day, Ruby and Zoey found Celeste sitting at the kitchen table sorting fresh tomatoes from the garden. She set aside the bruised ones for soup, a dish she refused to eat but took pride in preparing for her sisters. She'd been reading about gardening and was eager to share her new knowledge with her sisters. "Did you know that tomatoes are fruit, even though they aren't sweet?" she asked.

"Then let's see you make a tomato pie," Ruby joked.

"Or a tomato strudel," Zoey added. Since Celeste's visit with Aunt Flory, her mood had improved, and she was much more open to chatter.

"That's just gross," Celeste said, shaking her head.
