Chapter 51

Zoey quickly realized why the lost expression on the woman in Mrs. Nelson's photo caught her off guard. She looked just like Celeste. 'Lots of people had autism. So it wasn't surprising that it was as likely to show up in a picture of a tall black woman in South Carolina twenty years ago as in a triplet in the southern part of Canada. Still, it was jarring to see it in black and white.'

Ruby and Mrs. Nelson didn't appear to notice the resemblance. Zoey, her heart racing, ran a hand over the photo and feigned polite interest. "Who are these people?" she asked.

"S-some of Martin's family," Mrs. Nelson replied casually. "Cousins, I think."

Curious, Ruby leaned forward to examine the image, dismissing it with a shrug.

Despite their disinterest, Zoey persisted. "They look interesting," she said, hoping to spark Mrs. Nelson's attention.
