I can't believe it," Aunt Flory exclaimed when Zoey finished telling her the story. "It never occurred to me that Martin might be your biological father. Not for a moment. I didn't even know your mother and the Nelsons were particularly close."

"Rosemary certainly pulled the wool over all the busybodies' eyes," Verna said. "Not one of them even considered the possibility."

"Why would they?" Ruby exclaimed. "He was the last person anyone would suspect. He was completely devoted to Mrs. Nelson."

"That's why our mother wanted to help them have a child," Zoey said. "She admired that."

Dr. Tanner was uncharacteristically silent as if he were considering something.

"It's so sad," Zoey said. "Mrs. Nelson never got her baby."

"She was so much stronger than we knew," Dr. Tanner said.

"She was no fool," Verna agreed.

"How did you keep the note to yourself all these years, Celeste?" Aunt Flory asked with a sad expression. "I guess I accidentally taught all of you to be secretive."
