The smell of blood and guts welcomed him to the sight of the new world, the screams breaking the neighborhood silence and crowds of people running the opposite direction left Ryan frozen.
The sound of flesh being torn and the new Scarlet paint of the neighborhood streets was all he needed to see, He didn't even need to think twice before closing the windows and locking the doors.
"Must be a nightmare of some sort, I will just go along with it"
Ryan told himself as he sat back on his couch and ignored the strong stench of blood coming from the outside, he switched on his TV and a news channel was on, he quickly changed channel but another news channel was there, he did it several times but the same broadcast seemed to have taken over all local TV stations.
"We advise all civilians to remain calm and s avoid contact with anyone who has been scratched or bitten by the infected, military personnel have been sent out on evacuation duties so there is nothing to fear just stay in doors and wait for rescue"
Ryan got up from the coucas he took a small peek out of the window, he could see some middle aged man running away with fright written on his face from a slow limping man, his eyes were void of pupils with his skin turning a bit dark.
"Infected, I guess this is a zombie related nightmare, I never had any form of fear for zombie films so why do I have it as a nightmare"
He was already educated on all sort of apocalyptic knowledge, the idea of an apocalypse was something humans had already thought of for years, it was a dissappointment that this nightmare wasn't a little more scary or creative, this dream was just to unbelievable and stupid, how could mere walking corpses cause the fall of humanity.
With his pop culture knowledge, his number one objective should be gaining weapons, Ryan eyes flickered around the room to look for any object what using.
He found only a few knifes and cutleries, he despised the fact that this dream had to be apocalyptic, the worst part of an apocalypse was gathering supplies, one would have to face numerous dangers, even with his knives having to get so close to the walking corpses was a dangerous action.
Ryan still thought this was a dream yet his body instincts would keep him from doing anything stupid like killing himself to wake up or walking out from his apartment and just letting himself get killed, Andy placed his knifes and cutleries into a black backpack and wore it behind him.
He placed a certain amount of food which he could carry within his backpack as well, food was a necessity.
His ears pressed against the door waiting till the sound of zombies groaning ceased till he made his move, the screams of despair of his neighbors didn't make his heart flutuate in fear actually there was a hint of excitement, how would he do in zombie slaying he could only wonder.
'The sound stopped maybe I should take a look'
Ryan opened the door a bit and took a small peek down the hallway, a tall old man could be seen struggling with one of this flesh craving creatures, a duo of a woman and a young girl were seen running in the opposite direction, he was keeping the beast busy till they escaped, it mouth clenched forward wildly trying to get a piece of the humans flesh but the man was resilient, he wouldn't offer his life without a fight, his eyes brimmed with determination but it wasn't enough.
His hands gave away and the creature fell him to the ground with the zombie collapsing with him, it teeth sung into arm and it didn't let go.
Ryan felt pity on this man, it was such a wonderful sight to see someone fight with all their might and with their lives on the line but it was also satisfying to see that look of despair when one lost after putting their all Ryan truly enjoyed it in such zombie films but now looking at it up close, he felt nothing but sympathy for the man unlucky fate.
Ryan would have been able to use this man if he survived after all such confidence and courage was rare to find in the beginning of the apocalypse most would be to confused, scared or shaken by the current events.
Ryan could see the man eyes focused on him, and all one word escaped his mouth, a soft quiet word, Andy barely heard it.
"H-Help_"
'What a selfish bastard, his only thinking about his survival why I people so damn selfish, if I come there who knows if I will live to see another day but who cares this only a dream' Ryan thought as he looked at the man who was still being eaten.
"H-Help them" The blonde man finished saying his words, he face was pale and his eyes fluttered, he bit his in pain with his forearm already half devoured.
'Help them' those two words hit Ryan hard, he never expected this, this man even in his dying breath, even in this state was still thinking about others.
'Foolish, foolish, what kind of unrealistic character did my mind create, nobody could be like this, people are just people, all their end goals is to thrive and succeed no matter who they have to step on, this isn't how this scene was meant to go, he was supposed to be crying and screaming for anybody to save him and not asking for somebody to be saved' Ryan thought
"Help them"The blond man said once more, his face slowly losing it color as his arm was no more, the zombie advanced to his face and soon he wouldn't have the voice to talk anymore.
Ryan knew leaving his room would be the wrong choice at this moment, the sound of groans were still nearby indicating enemies, it was logical and the appropriate plan to stay in doors for the time being, it gave him the highest chance of surviving.
But if he just ignored this man due to it increasing his survivability then he was no different from a animals which just woke, eat and sleep, that was surviving, that was the difference between humans and animal, animals survived while humans lived quite a big difference between the two.
Ryan hand tightened around the door knob and all he mouthed was sorry to the blonde man, he slowly closed the door and the blonde man did nothing but accepted his fate with a smile and closed his eyes getting ready to be eaten alive but instead of feeling teeth pierce into his skin, he felt something moist around his face it was droplets, droplets of blood.
The blonde man eyes opened and all he saw was the creature face impaled by a knife from behind , right in the middle of the forehead.
"You know what I must do right"Ryan asked with his still holding on to the hilt of the knife.
"Yes I do"The man replied while he nodded his head, his lips were still shaking and tears rolled down his eyes.
Ryan looked on at this and sighed, he respected the man bravery for protecting the two females but if he wasn't ready to die then why risk it, why fight, where they some close relations but the way they left him without batting an eye meant they might not have known each other long, humans were confusing creatures but unique one of the only few that can fight against their natural instincts and fight for what they believe another difference between animals and humans.
this man wasn't prepared to die but willing, Ryan raised his knife into the air above his head and swung it down with all his might into the man head, blood splattered and a crimson stream followed out of the broken head, the man felt nothing and died peacefully.
Ryan panthed a bit, to break a skull really took a lot out of some one, he added especially more force to make it a quick death but his arms were already feeling heavy or maybe it was mental tiredness from killing a person, the weight of the knife felt heavier and at this moment Andy knew this wasn't a dream.
Yet he didn't feel scared or worried about the way things were, at the end nothing was truly different, people were dying, okay but that didn't really change things, people died on a regular basis normally, it was natural, the only thing different about this world current state was that deaths were more gruesome.
Ryan looked at his apartment door, he could go back and keep hiding but there was still those two women who that man saved, people were truly selfish, they didn't even care about the man who saved them and left, if they stayed they could have helped him, if not for their cowardice he would still be alive.
But Ryan knew he couldn't truly blame them, fear was natural to all living beings, but one couldn't just let it dictate their actions.
Ryan ran after the female duo, after seeing the late man display of courage, he wouldn't let his sacrifice be a vain by letting those two idiots get killed.
Ryan eyes noticed the laying corpses around the floor and they didn't seem to be new, the apocalypse only started a few minutes ago, at least that what Ryan thought, he had been to concentrated focusing on his phone all night that he didn't realize the screams in his apartment building.
Ryan reduced the speed to steps as he could hear the banging of wood nearby, a fresh zombe had been Slamming against the wood for sometime that it arms looked to be broken, it was even using it head to hit against the door.
Ryan didn't even need to guess were the two women were, he sneaked behind the zombie had with a swift rough cut he beheaded it.
"How the hell is humanity losing against such foolish beings"Ryan muttered.
"Open up, it safe!" No reply was made, "open up it safe" he repeated, still no reply, he didn't worry after all he didn't really care about this strangers but after remembering what that old man went through the keep them safe.
He grabbed onto the door knob and ran into it but he didn't feel the solid wood but thin air, the door was already open but he didn't hear it unlock.
'Was it unlocked all this time"He asked himself.
In his attempt to stop his charge he had tripped and his whole body had fallen to the ground, his eyes couldn't help but steal a few glances at the beautiful red head before him, it was the younger of the two women, her looks were what one in a fantasy novel would describe as fairly like, one which he never expected to see in real life but he didn't get enough time to truly appreciate them, as a hammer swung down towards his face.
"Fuck!"
