They'd barely spoken to each other since the day before. He had stormed out of her room and hadn't approached her again. But she had remembered something.
"The factions... When did they come up?" Kara asked Ryker as she sat opposite him, dropping her tray on the table.
"What?"
"Adrian said they were established when a Sister had a child and he wasn't referring to me. Who is he talking about?" She pushed on.
Ryker frowned. He didn't have an answer to that.
"You are asking the wrong person."
They both turned to Destiny, who walked in with Frederick.
"Frederick." Kara frowned.
"Nice to see you too Kara." He chuckled and sat beside her, opposite Destiny.
"Why are you here again?" Destiny glared at him.
Frederick leaned forward and picked the apple on her tray. "I figured you'd missed me."
"In your dreams Wolf."
He winked at her. "Oh don't worry, you are always there."
"As much as watching you two flirt is amusing, I kind of want answers." Kara interrupted. She wasn't lying, watching them was amusing.
Destiny sighed. "You know, at first I thought humans were complicated. But you supernaturals are special, arrogant and complicated. You think yourselves better than humans but still make the same mistakes we do."
The men had no response to that.
"The first Sister was a Deville, that's what they won't tell you in history class. Anastasia's ancestor, your ancestor. Beautiful powerful but overall, kind. But she got married and had a child. Other realms, I prefer calling them tribes, resented that. They hated that someone had laid claim on her. They believed that a sister should belong to everyone and no one. Getting married didn't change who she was but of course her family comes first… But they... They didn't want that."
Kara held her breath, listening. She felt the story in her bones, in a way she couldn't explain.
"Her daughter didn't become a sister no... But they didn't care. The other tribes have always feared the Devilles, so they burnt them all. Only Anastasia survived, to make themselves feel better, they made her theirs. She had the mark of a Sister and they made sure they had a hold on her. Till she fell in love of course..." Destiny chuckled bitterly and downed her drink. "Or at least that is the story I know. Supernaturals aren't exactly known for keeping their history true. They twist it to fit themselves. Same with the prophecy."
They all turned to her in shock. Destiny said nothing at first, gathering her thoughts. Playing everything she'd found out carefully.
"Why now? Why didn't a prophecy come when the first Sister had a child, that should have caused a ripple. Why not when the Devilles were burnt and Anastasia was the only one left. Is it because Kara is an alpha, is her blood that strong ? Is it because she has Hera in her or is someone behind it all?" She said finally.
"You think someone caused all this? Made the prophecy and is leading us all on a wild goose chase?" Frederick asked quietly, his tone taking on a dangerous note.
Destiny glared at him. "Yes I believe someone manipulated you all and caused the prophesy to be. But it is just my thought, or is a mere human not allowed to analyse things?"
"You know that is not what I meant. You've always thought ill of us 'supernaturals' so can you blame me?" He returned her glare.
Destiny scoffed and leaned back with her arms folded. "Can you blame ME? You all think you have more right to the world than anyone else? You burnt an entire tribe just because you couldn't control them! I'm sure that if you all could find the Free Spirits, you would make sure they go extinct! Reginald is only alive because the people that know of him are few. Very few."
Kara heard it in her mind. 'You know the story. You know she is right.' Kara shook her head.
"Someone has always been out to get the Devilles. First Hera, then hatred for the Sister, then the entire Deville tribe and now, Kara and Hera again."
It was something to mull over as each was lost in thought. Kara felt her emotions spiking again. She felt as though she knew something and it was on the tip of her tongue.
"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be with the pack or something?" Kara asked Frederick.
He looked up at her and waved his hand. "Your father and Conrad can handle things."
"Handle things? Have things gotten really bad?"
He looked at her, contemplating his answer.
"I'm afraid by the time school resumes, everyone would have figured out who you are. There is a rumour going around that you are Alonzo's daughter. The elders of the pack are calling a meeting." He explained.
"What do you think will be their decision?" Ryker asked.
"I don't know. They might summon Kara, it would be best to have her on their side. Or they might have Alonzo disown her, say she is not of the pack." He answered, his tone taking on a sad turn.
Kara frowned. "I'm already not of the pack."
"The problem is, they can't push you from the pack unless you say so yourself. You are the true alpha. Push comes to shove, you can control the pack with a growl." He grinned all of a sudden. "That is what your father is afraid of, so he'll try to convince them to accept you."
Her heart warmed a bit. Was she still holding out for him? Hoping that Reginald was wrong about him? Uncle Regi...
"I'm here to train you just in case. Not everyone in the pack will be accepting, so they'll want a duel-"
"Between?"
"You and Klaus."
"No." She said. She didn't even have to think about it.
"You underestimate your brother." He narrowed his eyes.
"I will not fight Klaus for a position that is his. I'll pull out. Say I don't want to be of the pack." She told him defiantly.
"I wish it was that easy little alpha but it is not. To renounce that position, you have to say it like you mean it. In front of the entire pack. The wolf in you must be willing to walk away." He glared at her. "Do you know what that will mean? You will be renouncing part of who you are. It will rip you apart and dear girl, you might run mad."
"I will take my chances."
"You will not." Ryker leaned forward and drew her gaze to his. "Do you want him to think you pity him? Besides, what do you think will happen when you run mad? With all that power in you."
She stared. It was on the tip of her tongue but she didn't know what to say. Deep down, she knew she couldn't become the alpha. Wouldn't become the alpha.
Hawk Bobalus. Her vision blurred for a minute and she saw him smiling with his eyes close, encased in a coffin made of ice. There was a hole in his chest, the killing blow. A ice spear through his chest.
Kara knew it as her body chilled. She'd been the one to kill and bury Hawk Bobalus.
"They are coming and they'll destroy me if they find me alive." He had grabbed her hand and pressed it to his chest. "I know what I ask of you is horrible Kara my dear, but I will feel better knowing you did it."
She'd tried to pull away.
"I know it is too much to ask but I think it will be beautiful to be buried like a Deville."
She struggled but she knew he was right.
"I loved your mother but I ended up loving you for you." He pressed his forehead to hers. "Now!"
She closed her eyes and pressed her hand to his chest. The ice had gone through his chest, freezing its surrounding and stopping blood from spilling. She'd felt him, heard him release his last breathe. It had been quick.
