Hired by the Grim Reaper

All but Ilya, Archer, Ava, and Fable on the Horizon were unaware that an alien was in their midst. Fable and Ji-ho were accidental witnesses to the true nature of James, the reason why they'd arrived at Renox. And their strict confidentiality on the matter was demanded by their commander.

When the lights in the starship indicated that the night cycle had arrived, the Horizon was set to cruise and the night crew took over to babysit the engines. Fable had erupted in hives for some reason and had run off to the med bay to get his blood checked. Ji-ho, finding herself alone, sat at an empty table and served herself a packet of tasteless nutrient paste and some protein bars.

The navigator was unwrapping her protein bar when someone decided to sit with her. Silver eyes met hers in a friendly smile and James asked, "Can I join you?"

"By all means," she responded, returning his smile. "Aren't you supposed to be locked up somewhere?"
