The bright morning sun peeked through the bedroom window blinds, splashing Alex's face with warmth. Though fully awake, she basked in the comfort of the bed for a while, stretching and talking to Lili, who snuggled up beside her. Off in the distance, Peter snored in a perfect rhythm. Judging by the direction in which the snores came, he never made it to his bed and spent the entire night in the recliner in the living room.
Alex drifted off to sleep again but only for a couple of minutes before she woke, stretched, and glanced around the room. It crossed her mind to actually get out of bed, but it was too comfortable so she stayed put. Only a few seconds passed before a hint of unease coiled in her chest. Something felt different. She scanned the room again. Everything appeared in order.
She reached over to pet Lili but he was no longer at her side. "Oh, that's it," she whispered to herself.
