Chapter 30

Alex's pulse echoed in her head. A labored breath sounded in her ears. Her breath? A sense of disorientation engulfed her. Fear churned in her stomach.

She struggled to open her heavy eyelids. They felt clamped shut. When they finally fluttered open, she caught a glimpse of darkness. Were they really open or not? Open, she thought. Her brain told her to keep them that way. Almost as if they had a mind of their own, they ignored her and snapped shut. She worked to force them open, and once she managed that, she had to fight to keep them open. In the end, her eyes were of no use in the pitch black surrounding her anyway.

Cool, damp air tore at her sensitive lungs. Within seconds, her throbbing head stole her focus from her stinging lungs. What in the hell is wrong with me? Her scrambling thoughts kept her from concentrating. She rested her pounding head in her hands for a moment. Unease gripped her spine. Where am I, and how did I get here?
