Chapter 50: Consequences

After Damon left to notify the Port Marden guard of what had happened, Amelia went to Kayla. Her body was cold; she'd departed this world some time ago. Before she could move the body, Damon's guard stopped her.

'Best leave her where she is, miss, until the men from Port Marden see her. They have ways of telling how she died, and they like things to stay just as you found them.'

He helped her to her feet and led her indoors where he stationed himself by the doorway. He refused any food or drinks, preferring to keep an eye on their surroundings.

Sitting by the fire, a mug of tea in her hands, Amelia lost herself in her thoughts as the sun rose through the window over the kitchen sink. Her heart weighed heavily as she pondered how things had come to this. Was there something she could have done to prevent Anders' breakdown, and Kayla's death?
