“B-b-beta Mee Noi?! What are you doing here?!” Rendered incredulous, I asked Thonburi’s young postmaster, still blindsided by the words that almost exited Anurak’s mouth, but my focus was now on my packmate. He still had his color for being in the camp, his bones weren’t drastically showing through his skin, and he seemed contented sucking on a moist sweet potato in the pouring rain. He looked to be newly admitted.

“Ahem, Luna, it is my pleasure to be in your presence. Under unfortunate circumstances, however,” the young man responded solemnly. “I’ll never forget what you did for me back at the palace, sticking up for me and promoting my position to Beta.” As he spoke, his eyes pierced flatly straight ahead, seemingly afraid to make eye contact with me. His words had a tinge of regret and guilt in them.
