Chapter 37: She Promised To Go Swimming

Abigail's POV

The summer sun sank in the sky, but its radiating heat still kept us sticky as we shuffled about and lugged around suitcases.

We were unpacked, and the campsite was cozy, except for one key detail.

“We need to get a fire started before it’s too dark,” she said as she poked a stick around the leftover ash in the fire pit. “Can you get me some kindling?”

“You know I can do more than pick up twigs,” I protested.

She stood up from her crouched position, reinstating her height over me. She was sweating, and her damp clothing was hugging her skin tightly. I wanted a taste of her salty lips. She leaned in to kiss me for good luck on my task.

“You’re so stubborn,” she held my chin up to her eye level with her warm hand. “But it’s cute.”

“Sounds like I need to hurry back,” I tried to be flirtatious and walk away slowly, waving my hips with each step. My heel caught a clunky pebble, and I wobbled off balance.
