Chapter 20: Bloody Night

Oliver stood in place, motionless, as though his feet had sprouted roots. A sea of bodies swirled around him, horses screaming and slamming into one another in their clamor to move with the tide. It all seemed like it was taking place in some other world, far too chaotic and frightening to be Oliver’s.

“Look out!” Aldric pulled Oliver aside just in time. A Crownseeker galloped by, right where he had been standing, his horse tearing up the grass beneath it in its haste. The recruits all huddled together, shying away from the wild charge taking place around them. Oliver felt like he was standing on a tiny island in the middle of a hurricane.

He looked up and saw Crane shouting at another Crownseeker. “What’s Tullind thinking?” he roared at the other man. “This is bloody chaos! Where are the standards? Goddess, what about waiting for word from the scouts?”

The other Crownseeker shook his head and shouted something back that did not carry over the screams of horses and men.
