Chapter 28: An Unexpected Meeting

Oliver followed Odeile to a nearby empty table and took a seat beside her.

He stole a glance at her. She was still watching Vamira dance, her sharp features unusually relaxed. Oliver wondered whether now he might at last get some information out of her.

But before he could think of how to begin, Odeile broke the silence. "You're hardly the sort of person I expected you to be, Trimble." She did not look at him when she spoke; her eyes were still resting on Vamira.

Oliver blinked. "What did you expect me to be?" he asked.

Odeile glanced at him. Oliver shivered under her hawk-like eyes. They seemed to belong to another person than the one looking at Vamira a moment ago.

"Truthfully?" Odeile said. "I expected an arrogant zealot, swelled with his own self-importance. I expected a person who would have no trouble justifying the most heinous of crimes, so long as it was done in the name of his goddess."
