Chapter 35: Wing, Fang, and Claw

Oliver dove to the ground at the last moment. A blast of wind ruffled his hair as the heavy body of the creature passed over him, teeth snapping beside his ears. It struck a nearby tree with a muffled, leathery thump, before skittering quickly around to face Oliver again.

He was given his first clear look at the beast. It looked like an elongated bat, but enormous, more than eight feet long from its piping snout to its stubby tail. A long mane of waving, jet-black hair trailed from its skull to the base of its back. Its face was like that of a jackal, grinning, with a black tongue lolling out from between its fangs.

Pale and milky eyes swiveled in its head to fix on Oliver, and it let out another piercing squeal, a noise like glass scraping across ice. Then, with an earsplitting crack of wood, it launched itself off the tree and at Oliver again.
