Chapter 39: Monster

Terror swallowed Oliver completely. He opened his mouth to scream. But before he could do so, the humongous hand wrapped around his shoulder suddenly shot up and clamped around his mouth. He barely had time for a strangled yell before he was silenced.

“Try that again,” the huge creature said in Zarine’s voice, “and I’ll rip out your insides.” It leaned closer, its huge, familiar eye flashing. “Nod if you understand me.”

Shaking, Oliver nodded. His scream still remained inside him, unreleased like steam filling a kettle. He felt like he would burst if he did not let it out.

“Now,” the creature said, “let’s try once more.”

It removed the monstrous hand from around Oliver’s mouth. It took everything he had to clamp his teeth around the scream and keep it down.

“Good,” the beast grunted. Then, without warning, it wrapped thick arms around Oliver and lifted him into the air. Oliver let out a strangled gasp. The monster had picked him up as easily as if he were made of straw.
