Chapter 73: Understanding

Zarine snorted. “What are you talking about?”

Oliver took a moment to consider. “There’s more to this,” he said slowly. “More than you’re letting on.”

“No, it’s actually very straightforward. You come out here and I eat you.” She cocked her head at him mockingly. “Is it the first or second part that’s giving you so much trouble?”

Unexpectedly, frustration shot through Oliver. “Enough, Zarine!” he said loudly. “Either tell me what’s going on or don’t, but stop these pointless threats!”

Zarine drew back a little, seeming baffled. “Pointless? I nearly tore your head off a minute ago! If you doubt how serious I am, come out here and I’ll demonstrate!”

“Well, then, I’ll have to just wait in my lovely little cave until you calm down, then, won’t I?”

Zarine stared at him, obviously having no idea what to make of Oliver’s sudden bravado. Truthfully, Oliver was just as surprised at himself as she was. He was hardly feeling brave at the moment, only sick and shaky.
