Chapter 77: Sunset

At the very edge of the Rigvire Jungle, all was silent. Boggy moors pockmarked the land, catching pockets of mist inside them that roiled like miniature clouds, tethered to the earth. An errant wind disturbed the scrubby plants, then was gone, as quick as it came.

Suddenly, two women crashed out of the jungle. Vamira and Odeile came jogging to a halt, both breathing hard. Vamira stooped, hugging a stitch in her side.

“We lost them,” she gasped.

“Some miles ago, I should guess,” Odeile said, wiping a thin sheen of perspiration from her brow. “Still, it was better to make sure.”

Vamira nodded. The Crownseeker attack had come out of nowhere the night before. Melkem had been the one to rouse her from her slumber, pushing her pack into her hands and telling her to run. Odeile had come rushing in her room, already dressed and ready to leave.
