Chapter 11: Moonbeams

Zariah

I am walking home with the dress bag in my hand. I’m so excited, I forget all about Alice until my cell phone rings. I fish it out of my pocket with my free hand, and my head is in the air, so far up in the clouds, I don’t even realize what’s going on when I answer. “Hello?”

“Uh… hi?” she says. It’s a question. “Where are you?”

“I’m going home,” I say. “I just got my dress, and it’s perfect! You’ll never believe how beautiful it is!”

“Okay,” Alice says, and I am beginning to realize that she is annoyed. “But what about me?”

“What about you?” I ask her.

“You just left me in the dress shop, Zariah,” she says. “Are you coming back?”

“Oh,” I say, understanding why she is annoyed now. “I’m sorry. I thought you were done.”

“Well, I got my dress, but what about shoes and jewelry and all of that stuff? Don’t you need that stuff?”

“No,” I tell her. “The old lady gave it to me.”
