Chapter 21: I Wanna Tell Someone

Zariah

“I can’t believe you came!” I say to James as I bound over to him the best I can in my heels and long gown.

“I know,” he says, looking a little red in the face, and not from heat either, I imagine. He looks a little self-conscious, probably because he’s not comfortable here, especially not in the suit. “But I figured I should come and see what it’s all about.”

“You look great,” I tell him. “It’s too bad you’re not interested in meeting anyone because I’m sure there’s a bunch of girls here, and guys for that matter, who would love to dance with you.”

I can tell immediately I have not made him feel any better as he turns redder. “Well, I don’t know that I want to do any dancing,” he says. “I just think I’ll make my appearance and go home.”

“That’s cool,” I say, not trying to put any pressure on him. “Want to get a snack?”
