Chapter 15: Locker Room Talk

River’s POV

Beads of sweat roll down the side of my cheek and the bridge of my nose as I run from the third base into a homerun. A few of the guys on the field are grumbling as they walk toward me, not even bothering to try and find the baseball I hit over the fence line.

I chuckle to myself as I step onto the base, and double over with my hands on my knees to catch my breath. Over the years I have learned to channel the strength I possess to not draw attention to myself, especially now that I’m on the baseball team.

If I wanted to, I could be hitting home runs every single time because I have the ability to do so with my inhuman strength. But that could cost me my identity and the possibility of someone questioning it, which is the last thing I want. Instead, I try to dull my strength to that of a human to appear as normal as possible. I only try to hit a home run every second swing, just enough to remain the captain of the team and impress my coach.
