Chapter 43

Sammy ended the call, put her cell on the coffee table, and leaned back on the couch. "Elise says the bones we found in the well are human. They confirmed it this morning. No telling how long they've been there, but it's a female, approximately thirty to forty years old."

Kerry let out the breath she'd been holding. "It's Mary Mackaby."

Paul patted her knee. "We don't know that."

"I do. It's her." She didn't know how she knew, she just did. It was a gut deep awareness unlike anything she ever felt before. The sadness and despair she'd sensed by the well in Black Canyon had been unmistakable.

Sammy leaned forward. "Things got violent when you brought up Mary in Jessup's presence. There has to be something to that."

"I need to help Mary."

Paul took her hand in his and laced their fingers, a silent understanding of where her heart lay-in the truth. He knew she needed to do this, to help the spirits, or this all would be for nothing.
