Chapter 44: The Truth Won't Always Set You Free

I handed Ares’ leash over to Wes before we started walking into the courthouse. Eric was granted permission to bring Ares into the courtroom with us. Apparently, Ares is a certified service dog. How’d I never know that? I would’ve brought Ares with me to school every day and snuggled him for comfort if I did poorly on a test. Clarice used to bring Ares to work with her in the hospital. Sometimes she worked in the pediatric cancer wing of the hospital, and she’d bring Ares to make the little kids happy.

I’m not going to lie; I threw up this morning thinking about telling the judge the truth about the last four years. For all we know, Eric could be arrested for neglect if we tell the truth. However, Eric is on board with this decision and he’s going to be by my side every step of the way.

“Alright,” I sighed. “Let’s do this.”

“They say the truth will set you free, but I never thought it would aid in our separation,” Serena said.
