Chapter 49: First Night Jitters

“Go kill each other for the best rooms!” Wes exclaimed, holding the door open for the kids.

“Nice,” I sighed. “Really nice way to start your role as guardian.”

Wes tugged me by my waist, and I collided with his chest. “Welcome home, my love,” he whispered.

I smiled and took a look at our foyer.

High ceilings create an echo of our voices. This house may be old, but it’s been taken care of over the years. The old furniture has been replaced with black leather because the kids would ruin the original white furniture. Tall double staircases were on either side of the foyer. The walls are a boring ivory color, but we're going to change that. This house screams 'fancy rich people' but soon it's going to scream 'Hastings!'

Most of Wes’ father’s childhood memories are in storage, but some of his pictures are still on the walls.
