Mabel thought about it for a while and decided to tell him what she really wanted and what was good for them.  His mother would pester her again if she knew Raymond,  her son who got her the work, and It would even be shameless of her to take that offer from him when she wasn't ready to give him what he wanted and wasn't ready to even like him back.

She knew his intention and knew what he wanted from her. She knew he wasn't offering her the help out of goodwill but because of his intention.
