Worrying for nothing

Chapter 9

The darkness is suffocating and time seems to have frozen over. The concept of time in this place seems irrelevant as only the void awaits and no future could be seen ahead.

Pain, terrible, and almost unbearable pain wracked his body. He wanted to cry, he wanted to shout, but he could not move his body.

Inside the void, all he can feel is the pain that seems to be slowly subsiding.

"I have been bitten several times by those bastards… I swear that I will get my revenge…" he thought as he grits his teeth.

Soon a calming sensation suddenly envelops his body as the pain has already gone away.

His attention was suddenly caught by a weird feeling as he noticed a small sparkle of light that seem to break the void. It was like a glass shattering when suddenly the light engulfs everything in his vision. He forcefully closes his eyes but it was to no avail.

He was suddenly blinded by the light.

Ugh!

Marc Lee suddenly opened his eyes and noticed the dimly illuminated area that he was in. Then before he knew it, he was assaulted by a stench that almost made him puke.

"What is this…" he muttered but then finds out that something heavy is actually lying on top of him.

When he looks down, his heart almost jumps out of his chest as his eyes met the ugly face of the mutated dog.

He suddenly uses his full strength just to push the mutated mutt away from his body.

After some effort, he was able to get out of that predicament.

He then looks everywhere wary that any monsters might still be lurking in the dark basement.

He quickly takes out the metal rod that seems to have pierced the heart of the mutated dog.

"This thing is dead, right?" he muttered as grabbed the cleaver and then grit his teeth and began breaking the thick skull of the dog.

He was soon able to find another crystal, but this time, it is dark red in color.

"Hmm… I wonder why that skill of mine stopped a while ago…" he thought as he remembers the slow-motion ability that he seems to have gotten.

Marc Lee did not have time to think of anything else and quickly checked his body. After seeing that his wounds have been healed, a slight smile appears on his face.

"I think I heal faster…" he muttered as he grabbed his stuff and then walked to the deeper part of the basement.

He found the generator but frowned when he saw its size.

It was not actually a small generator, but a big one. He knew that if he starts this thing then he would surely create a loud sound. Well, even if it was a small generator it would still produce such loud noise.

He also checked the water pump and noticed that it could still function but he needed to be fast if he wanted to make sure he is not caught when these things start running.

So for now, he did not have to tinker with them yet.

While looking around, he soon found a small room on the side.

He began to rummage the things inside that room and soon discovered something that he could use.

"This is an inverter… I can use this…" he muttered as he checked the object.

While checking he could see that the object is actually old, but he is confident that he is able to fix that thing.

And so he quickly puts it inside his backpack and continues rummaging inside the room.

Unknown to Marc Lee, the dead mutated dog's body is slowly changing.

Its blood is slowly flowing in the direction of the stairs where the door to the basement is located.

And because of that flowing flood, a strong rancid scent is wafting towards the vent underneath the door.

And from that vent, the smell of blood is slowly spreading throughout the area.

At this time, a zombie is currently sluggishly walking down the corridor. Its empty eyes look disturbing as if they could suck one's soul into it.

It was just walking aimlessly when suddenly it stopped.

It suddenly lifted its head and seems to have found a strong scent that made it open its mouth and showed a row of razor-sharp teeth.

Grrr!!!

It growled as its empty eyes suddenly turned dark red and its sluggish movement became energetic. By only taking a whiff of the bloody smell that zombie became crazed.

It quickly began running in the direction of the blood.

At this time, Marc Lee has just finished rummaging the small room and found many things that he can use. He quickly put those things in his backpack and decided to go out.

He walked towards the dead dog and was shocked to see that its massive frame has now turned small. Although the changes on its skin did not change, he could tell that the dead mutated dog seem to have returned to normal.

"Hmm… How did this happen?" he thought as he was about to squat down.

Bam! Bam!

Marc Lee almost stumbled when he heard the banging sound coming from the door.

Then the banging sound continues as it seems that there is more than one of those zombies is outside the door.

This situation quickly made Marc Lee feel panicking.

He did not know how he could get out of this place now. His eyes quickly darted all over the place.

But no matter where he looks, he could not see any exit.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

The banging continues and it made his heart beat faster in anxiousness.

"No… There has to be a way out…" he muttered in panic as he looks around once again.

Outside, several zombies are already banging the basement door. The craziness in their eyes is evident and they all wanted to push open the thing that is blocking their path to their meal.

Suddenly, from the end of the corridor, a large figure appears and locked its gaze on the gathering zombies.

When it saw a large number of zombies, a wide grin actually appears on its ugly face showing its face filled with razor-sharp teeth.

Grrrahh!!!

It suddenly roared in the air as if it felt elated.

The large figure is around 2-meters tall and has a muscular upper body. Its head is actually bigger than a normal zombie and its jaw seems to be displaced making its mouth look bigger.

Red and green veins could be seen on its upper body and its tattered pants are evidence that it is unable to contain its thick limbs.

Suddenly, it lowered its large head and then lifted its gaze up as it locks on the group of zombies. Then without hesitation, it suddenly sprinted forward.

Its speed was fast, its gait is strong, and each step it takes creates cracks on the tiled ground.

Like a raging rhino, the tall and bulky zombie runs like crazy while extending both of its hands forward.

It was already too late before the rest of the zombies realized that a predator is after them.

Wham!!!

The zombies were thrown to the ground and the tall and bulky zombie quickly chump off the heads of those zombies he caught.

Its mouth could open wide that it can bite whole a person's head in one go.

It did not stop and started feasting on the zombies around it.

There are zombies that seem to realize that they are in trouble and they began to fight back.

Using their claws and their mouth, they also began attacking the tall and bulky zombie.

As the wound appears on its body, the bulky zombie gnarled in agitation. It then swings its large burly arms and hit those zombies coming right at it.

Then it began to grab those zombies that keep biting its body and throw them to the ground. Its hand was suddenly bitten by one of the zombies, but it quickly bites that zombie's head off.

Crunch! Crunch!

The bulky zombie chewed and the blood and brain juice slid down from the corner of its mouth.

The more it chewed the more its face displayed satisfaction as if eating something very delectable.

After disposing of the zombies in its surroundings, it suddenly roared in the air as if declaring that it was the winner.

It suddenly stopped as its small nose seem to pick some strange scent.

Upon smelling that scent, it subconsciously licks its pale lips with its long and pointed tongue.

The bulky zombie slowly turns its attention towards the door behind it.

It sniffs in the air a couple of times before a delighted expression appears on its face.

Grrr!!!

It growled as it looks at the door. As if with a semblance of intelligence, it uses its large hands to grab the small door knock.

But how could it grab the small knob when it is unable to control its motor reflex that easily.

Suddenly, as if annoyed that it could not open the door, it suddenly punches the door.

Bam! Bam!

The surface of the door was immediately dented. The basement door seems to be made of a thin sheet of metal and as the large creature punches it, it began to cave in.

Bang!!!

The last punch sent the door flying inside the basement.

A large head slowly peeks inside the opened basement and then sniffs around.

Its eyes then landed on the carcass of the dead mutated dog.

When it smells that aroma in the air, its eyes suddenly glowed.

The huge zombie entered the basement door sideways as its large body seemed to be unable to fit the door.

It then greedily grabbed the carcass on the ground and began devouring it.

Its face displayed some kind of delight as it enjoys the meal served before it.

After a while, it finished devouring the mutant dog and what's left are the bones on the ground. The hulking zombie brute's body suddenly staggered as if it felt groggy.

Grrr!!! Grrr!!!

Its breathing became rapid as it began to stagger inside the basement room.

Feeling a bit confused, it turns towards the door and then extended its large feet to go up the stairs.

But then it suddenly stumbles.

The brute clutches its head as if feeling pained and then it released a long and loud howl. And if one listened one could hear a faint and high-pitched shriek combined with that howl.

Meanwhile, Marc Lee is currently hiding inside the vent just above the brute.

Using the small hole from that vent, he watches as the large brute staggered below him. He dares not breathe nor move as his body is frozen with fear.

Especially when the brute cried in pain, his mind almost went blank as if assaulted by some spiritual attack coming from the zombie brute below him.

"Damn this thing! This bastard is crazy!" he cursed in his heart as he covered his ears.

Then after a while, the brute zombie stopped as it staggered while walking out of the basement.

Marc Lee dares not do anything and just keeps on hiding at the vent while waiting for things to subside.

An hour later…

"I think everything is over, right?" he thought as he looks ahead of him. Through the darkness, he could still see faint traces of some movements inside the vent.

He knew that those were rats but those things dare not approach him.

He then moved his body and then slowly opened the latch. After seeing that no movement are happening on the ground, he slowly dragged his body down.

He was very careful not to make any sound and looks everywhere just to make sure that no zombies are around.

He then grabbed his backpack and cautiously approached the now wide-open door of the basement.

He looks outside and noticed that the sun is actually about to set.

"I have to hurry and go back…" he muttered as he carefully walked up the stairs.

He soon reached the door and then carefully peeks outside.

The corridor is now empty and some zombie limbs are scattered everywhere.

Marc Lee could only lament when he noticed that the zombie does not have any heads.

"It seems that the thing has eaten their heads…" he thought as he walks towards the emergency exit.

He carefully listened and feeling that no movement could be heard, he slowly opened the door.
