A good view

Chapter 12

A severe headache and unclear vision greeted Marc Lee as he slowly opened his eyes. He found a familiar ceiling and a comfortable and soft bed on his back.

Ugh…

He groaned as he tried to clear his vision by blinking his eyes a couple of times and then rubbing them.

The sun outside the window illuminates the flat and he noticed that everything seems clean. It was not the way he left it before.

"Did… Did she clean up the house?" he muttered to himself.

He then found out that he is wearing his usual clothes which is clean and not blood spotted, he felt a bit weird.

"Did she also… clean me… and my clothes?" he thought as he could not help but imagine what the woman did to him.

As he looks around, he feels a bit weird when he suddenly heard a familiar sound from outside the window.

"Cars… There are cars outside…" he muttered.

Then suddenly from the corner of his eyes, he noticed a figure standing with her back facing him.

She is wearing a clean apron and seems to be busy doing something.

He wanted to greet her, but he felt his head aching.

He extended his hand to try and call her, but he suddenly felt his vision blurring.

Then… the woman seems to have heard him moving.

Her head moved to the side and showed her beautiful yet thin face.

He heaved a sigh of relief when he saw her. He wanted to ask for her help as he feels like he just consumed a lot of alcohol last night and is now having a bad hangover.

It has been years since he last drank a lot, and ever since he worked at home, he has stopped the habit.

"Help…" he muttered.

Mint suddenly tilted her head and then smile.

That smile of her completely froze him on the spot.

"Holy crap… her teeth are so sharp…" he thought.

Then before he knew it, she is already opening his dislocated jaw and chomping right at his neck.

"Aaah!!!" Marc Lee screamed as he suddenly sits straight from the bed.

He quickly grabs his neck and then looks around in panic.

He was startled when he suddenly heard something breaking in the kitchen.

He saw the awkward expression on Minty Wayne when their eyes met.

"I'm sorry, I was just startled…" she said as she quickly cleans up the mess on the ground.

Marc nodded his head and slowly lies down on the bed.

"It was a dream…" he muttered as he heaved a sigh of relief.

He found his forehead covered in sweat but when he looks at his clothes, he found that it was clean without the blood. Even his pants were removed and he is wearing a pajama.

"What is happening here?" he muttered as he thought that he is still in a dream.

But seeing the dusty windows and the dilapidated buildings in the neighborhood outside, he could tell that he is not in a dream.

He feels no headache or body pain as usual but instead feels that his body seemed to become healthier and stronger.

He could feel that every muscle of his body seems to have become stronger.

He did not have time to think about anything for a moment as he suddenly remembers the things he brought in the bag.

He stood up and then walks to the kitchen to get a cup of water.

"Umm… Miss Wayne… Where did you put my bag?" he asked.

Mint felt a bit shy at this moment but took a deep breath and then pointed at the corner of the entrance. She changed his clothes last night and felt a bit embarrassed.

"I put it there…"

Marc saw the backpack and nodded.

"Thanks…"

He then quickly rummages inside and saw the inverter he has taken and some of the electrical tools he knew that he could use.

He quickly checked and noticed that there is something wrong with the inverter.

"The reason why it was scrapped might be because of this…" he muttered as he began taking it apart.

It was already lunchtime when Marc woke up, and Mint was hesitant but still decided to ask him.

"Umm… Can I… Can I get something from my house…" she said hesitantly showing a hint of shyness on her face.

He looks at her and nodded his head.

"I'm sorry… I was too preoccupied with my stuff…" Marc apologizes.

Since he was grateful to have a companion in the house, he seems to have forgotten about her and was too preoccupied with what he needed to do.

He seems to have forgotten that she is just a normal woman who is afraid to go out and face those zombies.

After eating lunch, he decided to take her to the 6th floor.

He carefully opened the emergency exit door and gestured for her to stay put.

"I will check the 5th floor first…" he said.

He walked up to the 5th floor and saw the partially destroyed door. He could not help but frown as he carefully peeks inside.

With both hands gripping tightly the sharpened steel rod. He slowly walks inside the door of the 5th-floor emergency exit.

The smell of the rancid odor of blood in the corridor is a bit unnerving and nauseating. But for some reason, he is already partly used to it.

So he just covered his face with a scarf and enters.

He saw that the doors of the rooms were closed and there are no traces of movement inside.

He dares not open the door as his goal is not to clear this floor yet.

Seeing that nothing is amiss, he carefully backtracks and opened the 4th-floor emergency exit door.

"It's okay now… Let's hurry to the 6th floor." He said as he led Mint to the top.

When the two enter the 6th floor, Mint breathes a sigh of relief as she could not help but feel terrified.

Her knees have been shaking all this time while walking to her house and she almost threw up when her nose was assaulted by the rotten smell from the 5th floor.

She quickly gathers her stuff and when she was done, she waited for Marc to return.

He seems to be looking for something in the house in the middle.

When Marc returns, his backpack seems to be full of things.

The two then walked back to the 4th floor and came back to the flat.

That afternoon, Marc busied himself fixing the inverter and converting the zombie crystals into a power supply.

It did not take long before he finished his project and was finally able to turn on the computer and the lamp in the bedroom.

It was already nighttime when he was done and the two of them ate dinner.

"Since we already have electricity, why not turn the light on?" she suddenly asked while the two are having their meal.

"An then invite some unknown figure to this place? No… we cannot risk that…" he said while shaking his head.

"Ah… Okay." She just nodded her head.

"By the way, the water for washing is already dwindling low…" she reminded.

"I know… I will try to gather more supplies tomorrow and then plan out my next move to make those pumps work…" he replied with a nod.

Water is essential to their daily lives so this is the reason why Marc has risked going to the basement. And now that he has a clear view of the situation in the basement, he could now formulate a plan for his next move.

The next day…

He decided to go to the top floor and check the water tank for problems.

And so the figure of Marc Lee began scaling the emergency ladder at the side once again. When he reached the rooftop, he quickly looks around and checks if there are possible zombies around.

When he saw and heard that there are no moving figures, he quickly hops onto the rooftop and then walked toward the water tank.

But then suddenly, he noticed something moving at the side next to the entrance door of the emergency exit of the roof.

His eyes went cold when he saw that it was actually a sluggish zombie.

"Hmm… This thing is like an assassin…" he thought as he grabbed the sharpened metal rod and slowly approached the zombie.

It has already discovered him when its sluggish movement suddenly stopped as its eyes turned deep red.

Shriek!!!

It cried as it suddenly rushes at him.

When he concentrated on the zombie, he discovered everything turned into slow-motion.

Upon feeling this, he knew that the ability in his battle with the dog is back.

He just frowned when he remember that it did not function as it should while fighting that zombie with black and bony horns on its body.

Marc did not hesitate to quickly move and then prepares the metal rod and then plunges it into the zombie's head.

Puchi!!!

Without any thrill, the zombie's head was skewered by the metal rod.

He swings it to the side and the zombie tumbled like a ragdoll to the ground.

But Marc did not lower his vigilance as he could hear some movement on the side.

He suddenly saw a topless female zombie trying to crawl toward him. But she could not get out because something heavy has fallen on her back.

He did not hesitate to plunge the metal rod into her head ending her struggle.

Marc did not waste the zombie crystals and removes them using a knife.

He then walked towards the large water storage tanks at the top and start checking them out.

After he climbs the ladder, Marc can now see almost everything below him.

Thick dark smoke could be seen from afar, which means that something might have happened there, and sluggish movements on the streets… there are even brute-like zombies roaming.

But he could not see any trace of any human activity in the area.

"*Sigh… Is this really the end?" he muttered while feeling a bit of melancholy in his heart.

He is a young man and has been living a good life before this has happened.

Who could have known what in just a few months… his world would turn upside down.

"I think I was lucky that I slept through this nightmare while it is happening." He thought.

He knew that if he is aware of what is happening at that time, he would surely run out of his flat and try to escape.

He suddenly frowns and then looks at the sky.

"Hmm… I wonder how she is doing… Did she survive all of this?" he muttered as he suddenly recalled a certain person in his past.

While working on one of his odd jobs, he met a wonderful lady whom he became close with. She was warm and gentle at that time and thought that she would be good girlfriend material.

But he has no time for such a thing.

He has a goal in his life and decides to stay as her friend.

"Ah… Enough of this nonsense… Let's just clean the other houses on the 6th floor…" he muttered as he decides to go to the 6th floor and then checked the other condo there.

After he got inside the floor where the zombie mother and her children were, he quickly walked to the condo on the opposite side of Miss Wayne's.

He checked the door and it was locked. However, he is not worried as he has a tool in his backpack that could open such a door.

He carefully rummages inside his backpack and takes out a nail puller. The metal bar looks a bit old but he could feel its sturdiness.

He has taken such a thing from one of the rooms on the 4th floor and knew that he could use it.

Actually, when he lost the cleaver, he already knew that using sharp weapons is easier when you have the strength to swing them. But due to the experience he had with that bony zombie, he knew that another tool would be ideal.

And that is why he brought the nail puller.

"I guess this thing would do…" he muttered as he inserted the nail puller near the doorknob and then with all his strength he pulled.
