Lorenzo Cruz was stepping out of his casino with one of his bodyguards when Jorge, one of his men walked up to him.
"What is it, Jorge?" Lorenzo asked with impatience. It was getting late and he needed to meet with his grandfather before the old man went to bed. They both had a lot of things to discuss the family business. Lorenzo just found out that there is a mole among his men, and he needed to find out who it was, as soon as possible. The person has been feeding the police information about their business and now the DA of the city was on Lorenzo's case. He needed to find a way to clean up the mess before it became too late.
"Boss, I think we've found out who the mole is," Jorge said.
Lorenzo hissed in irritation, "you think, or you know? Which one is it?" They all knew Lorenzo hated assumptions, if you weren't sure of something it would be best you didn't bring it up to him in the first place.
"We know who it is boss," Jorge corrected himself.
Lorenzo stopped in his tracks as he was about to get into his car. "Who is it?" He asked.
"It's Peter," Jorge said.
"Peter the new guy?" Lorenzo asked him.
"Yes boss, we just found out that he is working as undercover for the police," Jorge said.
"What the fuck!" Lorenzo hit his car in annoyance, causing his men to flinch. He turned to look at Jorge, "I thought you said you did your background check on him and verified he was clean before he was employed?"
"Yes..... yes boss, we did but....." Jorge didn't get to finish his statement because Lorenzo grabbed him by his collars. "But what?! You had one job! One freaking job and you failed! Now see what your stupidity has caused us!"
"I... I'm sorry boss, I....."
"Don't be sorry, fix it!" Lorenzo let go of Jorge's collar and pushed him away.
"Fucking fix it!"
"I will boss," Jorge said with his head down.
"You had better. And I want that snitch brought to me tonight!"
"Yes, boss."
Lorenzo's driver opened the door for him, and as he was about to get into the car, he saw a lady running in his direction with two men in hot pursuit of her.
"I'm sorry Miss, the entrance is the other way," one of Lorenzo's men said to her as she approached them.
"Please help me," the lady said breathlessly to Lorenzo's men who were stopping her from getting any closer.
Elena turned around and saw that Carlos' men were coming closer and started to panic, if these men caught her, then she would be dead.
"Please I beg you, don't allow these men to take me, they are after my life," she didn't know these men, or who they were. But with their built, she could tell they would be able to protect her from Carlos' men. And the man in the middle looked like their boss, seemed kind, or so she thought.
"Let her come," Lorenzo said in a calm voice.
"Thank you," Elena ran to him and clinched to his side, "please just pretend to be my boyfriend," she whispered. She Lorenzo felt her slip something into his jacket as she smoothed her black long hair with her hands. Now looking quite different from the woman who ran away from the hotel, Elena adjusted her dress and stood with poise beside Lorenzo, as she knew it would be quite difficult for the men to proove she was the one they were looking for.
"Yes? How may I help you?" Lorenzo asked in a cold tone referring to the two men who were chasing Elena, as they approached where they were.
The men must have realized who he was for they suddenly lost their confidence. "We want the girl," one of them summoned up the courage to say.
"What girl?" Jorge asked them.
"Her," the second guy pointed at Elena.
"What do you want with the lady?" Lorenzo asked them.
"She stole from our boss!" One of Carlos' men said.
Lorenzo could feel Elena's body stiffen against his, as she held on to his arm as if her life depended on it. Well, it does, because if what these men were saying was true, which he suspected it to be. Then, should he hand her over to them, she would be gone. He turned to look at her and she acted shocked.
"Stole from your boss? I don't even know who your boss is?" She looked scandalized. Lorenzo could have bought her story if he wasn't clever enough to see that she was lying.
Elena turned to Lorenzo, her expression now softened "baby, you certainly can't believe what these men are saying. They were the ones harassing me a while ago when I was on my way to see you." She looked like she was going to cry. Lorenzo looked at her in amazement, she wasn't just a thief but she was also a good actor as well.
"That's a lie! She was with our boss and she stole from him!" One of the men said.
"She stole his wallet," the second guy said.
"And what does the lady who stole from your boss look like?" Lorenzo asked them.
"Like her," one of Carlos' men said.
"What do you mean like me?" Elena sounded offended.
"What was the colour of her hair or colour of dress that she was putting on?" Lorenzo asked them. He couldn't believe he was doing this, but she came to him for protection and he was going to do that. Besides there was something about her, that he couldn't quite yet figure out. And it would be a slap on his face if these men took her away when she was in his territory. They could have her another time but not tonight.
"You are wasting my time, I don't have all night," Lorenzo said in exasperation.
"She had a blonde hair," one of the men said and his companion threw him a deadly stare for being so stupid to say that.
Elena chuckled, "is the color of my hair blonde?" she asked, touching her hair.
"It's you, your hair might look different but it's still same dress," the second guy said. "If you didn't steal from our boss, then why were you running?"
"That's because I didn't know why you both were coming after me. I had to run to save myself. Fine, since you keep saying I stole from your boss, why don't you search me?" Elena emptied the contents of her purse on the ground. "Does any of these belong to your boss?" She asked them, referring to her lipstick and other feminine items which were in her purse.
Lorenzo sighed exasperatedly; this drama was taking too long, and he had better things to do with his time.
"The lady has nothing pertaining to your boss, I'm sure you mistook her for someone else," Lorenzo said with a note of finality in his tone.
"But she is the one…." one of the guys said, looking frustrated that they've been fooled by Elena.
"Do you have any proof that she stole from your boss?" Lorenzo asked in annoyance. The mejy couldn't answer him.
"If no, then leave right away, and I will pretend that this never happened."
Carlos' men knew who Lorenzo was, nobody ever dared to cross his path, except the person was ready to die. Even their boss feared him. They knew it was wiser for them to leave if they still wanted to be alive by morning. So they turned around and left.
"Thank you," Elena breathed a sigh of relief after the men had left. Lorenzo didn't say a word to her, he just kept looking at her.
"I'm sorry to have bothered you, I will leave right away," she said.
"Not so fast," Lorenzo said, holding her hand as she tried to steal back the wallet she had slipped into his pocket.
"What?" Elena turned to look at him, wondering what he wanted from her.
Lorenzo glanced at his wristwatch and hissed, "we have to leave now," he looked at his men, "take her inside, and make sure she doesn't leave until I return."
"What?" Elena asked in shock as Jorge came and held her hands.
"Please come with me," he said to her.
"I will see you when I get back, girlfriend," Lorenzo said 'girlfriend' sarcasm before getting into his car.
Elena had thought she was running to safety, not knowing she had run to her doom. Could the evening get any worse?
