Chapter 44: King Damien

"When I was twenty-six, I was still working as an assassin," Ezra continued. "I had to repay the enormous debt to Carmichael, the boss. It was a ridiculously large amount after my training. They'd counted my room and board on top of the cost to clothe me. It would have taken me another fifty years just to pay it off."

Ezra took another sip of wine and looked at me, almost hesitantly. "Are you sure you want me to continue? It doesn't get any better from here."

"Of course, I do." I grasped his face in my hands and lowered a soft kiss to his lips. "This is you, Ezra. These are all things that happened to make you who you are. Of course, I want you to tell me all of it."

His eyes softened, and he kissed my forehead. I sat back on the couch and took another sip of my wine.
