The roof of the government building stood high over the surrounding city, giving a breathtaking view of the sun setting. Ezra had flown us up to the roof individually, bypassing the need for a louder entrance via helicopter.


I would've thought using his energy this way would be taxing, but he landed each of us with nary a sigh. He'd hand-picked the vampires to come with us. Those he trusted implicitly. It surprised no one at all that Richard wasn't among our numbers.


In all, we had thirteen people standing on the roof. Duncan, Ezra, and me, plus the ten vampires Ezra had chosen. Six men and four women, though I had never met them before tonight. I trusted Ezra to pick the right people for this mission. My last mission.
