Chapter 45: Confessions

Cayden POV

The ceiling is familiar.

It’s the first thought that comes to mind when I wake.

I take in the popcorn design, wiggle my fingers to make sure they still work, and attempt to move my head.

Instantly, I’m dizzy. My lips smack together when I try to open my mouth, dry as bones.

Movement to my left causes me to shift my line of sight.

Maverick’s head pops up, red and blotchy, but a smile blooms on his face when he catches my gaze.

“You’re awake.”

He’s at my side before I can blink, cupping my cheek in the warmth of his palm. I lean into him, letting the heat of his body seep into my skin, a small smile of my own caressing my lips.

“I—” my voice croaks and I start to cough.

“Let me get you some water.”

Maverick disappears, and I despair for a moment. It was too short, I wanted more.

My tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth, but Maverick holds a paper cup to my lips that refreshes me like a dry sponge soaking up water.

“There you go, slow down.”
