Larson followed Merlize into the woods, Edwin hanging on his shoulder. They found her aiming her slingshot at tree leaves.
Larson approached her. “There you are!”
“Didn’t I tell you not to follow me?” Her bitter voice threw knives as she faced away from Larson.
“Can you at least lend me an ear?” He pleaded.
She continued shooting pebbles at the leaves. “What is there to talk about? I already know my place.”
“Look at me when I am talking to you!” He grabbed her slender shoulders.
“Ah!” she squeaked like a startled cat. “Why do you touch me so?”
Electric pulses rushed inside each other’s veins. The warmth of his touch invoked the woman within her. Her minty doe eyes sparkled as if billions of stars danced within them. His focus stayed within the confinement of those eyes.
“Because… because…” Larson stammered.
Edwin kicked his human ear. “Step on full gear, boy!”
“Because I need…” He flinched.
Merlize supplemented his sentence. “Me?”
