Chapter 30: Hopeless

I nibbled at the chocolate éclair I’d ordered ten minutes ago when I first got to the bakery. My eyes kept darting between the door and the clock on the wall. Every time I heard the chime that signaled someone had come in, my whole body tensed up.

Finn would be here at any minute.

I’d told myself over and over how prepared for this I was. I’d had all night to think about it, because after the park I’d tried to talk to Finn, but he was busy with his family. That gave me plenty of time to figure out what I was going to say. I finally had all my thoughts in order, and knew what I had to do. I only needed the heart to possibly break someone else’s.

My butter pecan latte sat untouched on the table. The ice had already melted, and the condensation dripped down the sides and there was a puddle underneath the cup. I couldn’t imagine drinking it with how nauseous I felt.

The familiar bell on the door rang, and my eyes automatically went to see who had walked in.
