Chapter 35: An Enticing Offer

The whole way to lunch, I tried to stop my heart from pounding. I was sure that Caleb could still see how pale I was. He didn’t make any comments, though.

The restaurant was dimly lit and barely anybody was there. The only sound besides clanking dishes and silverware in the kitchen was the small fountain by the entrance. The peacefulness helped my heart rate go back to normal. We got seated quickly, and after putting our orders in, I finally spoke again.

“I’m sorry, Caleb.”

He shook his head as he took a sip from his water. “Don’t be. I get it. That would be hard to watch, given everything that’s happened.”

I peered out the window. I watched the bustling crowds in the street, and couldn’t help but wonder if any of them had ever doubted that their soulmate was real. Nobody’s fated meeting was ever exactly the same, but there had to be some people out there that were like me; people that didn’t know how to believe in any of it.
