After the rest of the family went to bed, cautious about an incoming attack, Cara sat on the couch downstairs with a deadly stare at the front door as if it would detach at any moment. Adrian had tried insisting they go to bed but she was adamant about keeping watch over the house.
he had given up when she ordered him to go upstairs coldly, letting him walk upstairs with a concerned glare, it was just reaching early morning when she had slightly wavered in her seat, slowly dozing off until Shaun had came downstairs in the middle of the night, heading to the sink for a glass of water.
"This is the fourth night you've stayed down here...you should go to sleep" he muttered, the voice shaking her from her daze.
"No...Something will happen eventually and I will not be caught off guard"
She looked at him pouring himself a glass, slowly approaching her on the sofa and sitting down with a deep sigh, he was dressed like he was going out, his shoes were bulky and black, laced and firm as they thump on the small coffee table to Cara's grimace. But her focus made her put up with his blatant disregard for manners.
"If we do get attacked, are you going to take them all on yourself?"
"If I must"
Shaun shakes his head, taking a sip of water.
"Do you want to know something I haven't told anyone yet? In case this is our last night alive"
Cara pauses for a moment before turning to look at him with a curious stare, nodding in reply with her orange eyes lighting up the dim living room.
"When I snuck out...I came across a book that showed me...I dont really know what it showed me"
"What did it show you?" she grew slightly concerned.
"A vision I think...of what happened before we we're abandoned there...I saw something I didnt think was possible but, while my mother was pregnant with me...There was another baby"
"What?" Cara's eyes widen at this sudden information, clearly he hadn't mentioned this to Kyle or they would've already discussed it.
"There was Kyle and our mother but, this baby was the exact opposite to Kyle, they were the same age...and my mother was talking to somebody on the phone, someone named Alex"
Cara was now very intrigued, the brother didnt have much recollection of their mother and this was the first either of them had really seen much of her and spoke of her. She takes full attention from the door as She swivels in her seat, facing him as she grazes his hands in a calming manner. Shaun was stunned he had even came out about this.
"I...I think there's another sibling...Kyle has a missing twin"
She gasped lightly.
"Are you sure? why wasn't they with you when she left you on that doorstep?"
"I don't think they were there, he or she could've been somewhere else...but why?"
"Wasn't it your grandfather that said he killed her after she handed you over?"
"He lied, she left us and ran...she didnt stick around long enough for them to open the door"
Cara was confused, after all she heard about the man that abused them, she didnt think it was a coincidence he might've lied to provoke the two, but what reason in those fleeting moments would he lie, when he was so severely outnumbered she thought.
"Your mother was a witch...surely she must've meant for you to see that? have you read the book since?"
"No...I can't..."
Cara lends him an arm he at first pushes away, but when she clasps her fingers over is, cupping his hands instead of holding them. She was very calming in that moment and when Shaun gazes into her eyes, its like she was his real mother, the very care he hadn't received his entire life was given in the month the time they had spent together.
"Trying to hold you're feelings at bay its often like holding water in your hands...no matter how tight your defences are, water will find a way"
Shaun had considered her words and reached behind him.
"This is the book...I haven't opened it..."
"May I?"
Cara held her hand to observe as he gives her the black book, it was small and rather thin for a book, more like a diary. He hands her it with confidence, wasting no time she opens the cover and reads it out of view from Shaun's eyes.
But there was nothing to read.
The book was completely blank, the only thing inside was a small note at the back, an incoherent message that made no sense, covered in many symbols, as if a fizzy censor was covering it from being read.

"I cant read this..." She admitted, showing him the blank book and the page that held the strange unreadable message.
"Hang on...I've seen these symbols before, in Kyles spell book"
Shaun points to the message as she furrows her brows.
"Magic...should've known" she sighs, standing the the surprise of Shaun.
"Where are you going?!" Shaun looked scared almost.
"This message could help you learn more about you're parents...Kyle might be able to take whatever is covering it away so we can-"
She's cut off as Shaun leaps from his seat, knocking the glass of water off the coffee table and spilling it everywhere in an attempt to snatch the book from her, but she was too quick for him.
"Shaun what is?-"
"Give it back, he cant get a hold of that book!"
"Whatever are you talking about?! This is your brother we're talking about why can't he know?"
"Because he doesn't deserve to! He's always had this strange connection to mum as if she was still alive...I didnt even get to know what she looked like until that book and I cant.let.you.take.it!" he says in-between struggled groans from Cara holding him back, the book out of reach.
"Shaun why are you doing this? He has a right to know" She says with a stern glare in her eyes.
"Please, you cant let Kyle know!"
And as the words left his mouth, his worst fears were unfolding behind him as his brothers voice calls out from the staircase he was standing on, his arms folded and a suspicious glare in his eyes.
"Can't let Kyle know what?"
His voice was tired as he was clearly awoken by the sudden movement from downstairs, Shaun was petrified as Cara looks at him with a mix of concern and apprehension, why shouldn't Kyle see the book.
"Nothing! just go back to bed and make out with your stupid boyfriend" he says callously, his temper being tested as Kyle quirks his brow.
"Excuse me?" Kyle had gone from tired to wide awake in seconds, a flit of anger crossing his eyes as they opened fully.
"You heard me" Shaun replied.
"What the fuck is your problem? All I've done is try my hardest to protect you and you treat me like shit! you treat Zayne even worse, you're lucky he isn't here to hear you or I'd-"
"Or you'd what? gonna flip a page from Grandpa's book? that'd be a new one for you"
Kyle had had enough and stormed over to Cara and looked at what she was holding.
"Show me"
Cara thought this matter was far too personal to get in the way of, so she handed him the book, and suddenly its like he goes into a trance, Shaun knew he was watching the vision from the book, but what he didnt know was how vastly different it was to his.
Kyle's vison started off similar with fast moving moments in time speeding before him, and as he tried to focus on one he's thrown to the side-lines and a full image spread wider and wider in front of him like a television. And the scene was Kyle's birth, but it was through his mothers eyes.
What she saw was her legs wavering as she pushed hard, her screams were loud and the entire building she was in shook from her screams. As Kyle looked around the scene, he noticed where they were, it was the leaves and branches on the inside of a ceiling with a thick tree trunk poling down the middle of the small hut, It was Magse's home, the very same that she had kidnapped and held him hostage inside.
As more vapid breaths escape her, the sound of a baby's cry echoed in the room, as another person comes into view, it was a man with blondish with small tufts of it coloured silver.
"Keep breathing darling it'll all be over soon~" He says, his voice was soothing and set both Kyle and his mother at ease.
"Oh yeah? want me to put a watermelon in you and see how well you push it out?" His mother says through the pain as the man smiled genuinely.
"You're adorable when your cheeks go red"
"NOT.HELPINNNGG"
In one final push, another baby's cries continue to echo through the air as Kyles eyes widen almost "a second baby...no...no way he kept this from me" he thought.
"Well, guess twins really do run in the family~" The man says as footsteps from behind Kyle's mother, and a familiar face pops into view, Mags herself was standing there, an amulet in her younger (She was still rather old looking) hands.
"Come child, we must begin the ceremony"
As the babies are handed to her, one was bright ginger while the other was a gorgeous silky blonde, She couldn't take her eyes off them, it was strange looking back into his own eyes, and the eyes of this baby he had no memory of.
"They're so perfect...My little Kyle and Melia ~"
And as soon as the moment began, it ended, swishing forward as Kyle gets pulled through more instances, he had a comfortable life, his father wasn't there often but when he was he saw how much he loved him. He often wore the same clothes as the Reign does, but its toned down and worn.
Another memory of his mother crying on the phone, Kyle and Melia were stood in their crib playing in the other room, but Shaun was nowhere to be seen.
And suddenly, He reaches what felt like a darker memory, it was dull and the edges on it were black and white, even when the memory played it started in black and white until colour joins in, it must've been one she had time to forget. It flicked and glitched sometimes.
Through his mothers eyes he saw a pier, it was a stormy night, and she was pregnant again.
This had to be Shaun Kyle thought, as she walked precariously towards the edge, like she wanted to jump in the rushing ocean beneath her. Her flowing Red hair was thick and curly, and her freckles resembled Kyle's almost identically.
"Marsha!"
She turned at the sound of her name, Kyle didnt know it until know, knowing it began with an M.
The blonde man before rushes down the pier.
"Get away from me Alex..."
"Not again...I wont turn my back on you again Mash" He called out, the pouring rain drips off his chin as he recites her nickname.
"You already did...you told them everything...about us...about my MOTHER!"
"It was a mistake! Please, can't you see it was the only way?! They wanted to take them!"
"She nearly died because of you, our children could've died. Because. OF. YOU!" Her booming Voice bellows out, much louder than the storm around them, the sky dark with blackened clouds, lightning striking behind her.
"You know I love Kyle and Melia...Why are you doing this?!"
She didnt answer, instead, choosing to release her emotions, the very chaos behind her was nothing to the power that radiated from her, her very eyes were no longer a pretty green and the hair that clung to her head seemed too melt away in the bristling fire now blooming there. Not even the rain could put it out.
Alex seemed to take a step back, his mistakes in the past becoming too costly, the sacrifice must've been great Kyle thought as she takes steps towards Alex.
"I...trusted you...never again"
She lifts her arm in a cutting sweep, the wood beneath his feet shoot up to skewer him, but his quick thinking skills allowed him to dodge out of the way. The look of sorrow had left his face, and realized it was truly over, baring a knife from his belt and an amulet that pulsed with a black substance inside it.
Kyle could tell, after all that grovelling, it was just an act...was this really who his father was?
"YOU TRAITOR!"
But just as they dive at each other, the memory cuts off and everything when black.
Kyle was stunned at what he had saw bewildered at how things ended and how they began, Being pulled to one last memory, there was a familiarity to it, it was no longer through his mothers eyes, he was now staring through his own, three years old and looking at his mother, who was leaving him and his new-born brother on the doorstep, the baby girl he saw at the beginning was missing, and his mother looked terribly weak.
She pressed her lips to his forehead while he cried from the rain, he was unsure if his face was wet from his own tears, or hers. Then she leans over to the baby basket his brother was in, listening to the whispers she quietly spoke to the baby he missed as a child.
"I love you Shaun...please, try to remember me...remember my hair...remember my lips, my eyes, my nose...and remember that I will always be with you...my Shaun..."
Her tone was sombre as her sobs carried on to the night as she hobbled through the night, the door opening and for a brief second he saw the tip of a gun in the top of his view, barely a second goes by before the trigger was pulled, he didnt see her get shot as he closed his eyes and wailed loudly, but her cried were silence quickly...assuming she was dead.
Kyle held his face as tears stream down his cheeks in hot floods, unable to contain himself, outside of the vision, everyone else watched silently as Kyle wake, the tears he shed evident on his cheeks as Shaun looks at him with a scared expression.
"You....You hid this from me..." Kyle's breath was hitching and he couldn't talk eloquently.
The expression wasn't just sadness it, was rage, and fear of what else his brother may be hiding from him after all he tried to accomplish in giving them a better life. Shaun was deathly silent he barely moved, knowing he should've mentioned it the minute he saw it.
"Why?" Kyle said more assertively.
"I-I dont-"
"Stop trying to slither your way out of it, this doesn't look good Shaun!"
"I didnt believe it was real...I thought if I said something it would complicate everything...from the phone calls to the twin..."
"Her name is Melia...and I could've known about it if you had just told me!" Kyle stomps his foot on the ground and a rumble goes through the floor, alerting everyone.
"Babe, calm down, we can talk about this" Zayne tries to settle the situation, but as usual, was watching this unfold like everyone else.
"I dont want to talk...I wanna know why you thought you had the right to keep this from me"
The argument was unfolding pretty quickly, Shaun had dropped the fear he was feeling and got defensive, while Kyle continued to interrogate him about what he saw.
"What did you see?"
"The same as you"
"Bullshit, Magic isn't as black and white as that, she gave us both something to see, each different...so tell me what she showed you" Kyle spat rather viciously, upset about the reveal of his father being a possible traitor and that he has a missing twin his mother didnt keep together with him, how could he have been so blind AND stupid. Shaun was stammering over what he saw that day, it had been awhile but it was still fresh in his mind, recounting over everything, the twin, the phone call, and then left at the night they were dropped on their grandparents door.
"So she did show me more..."
"What are you saying?"
"Im saying, what else have you been hiding from me, any other discoveries or strange occurrences you want to let slip?" Kyle was now fuming, you could practically see the steam flowing off his forehead as he advanced on Shaun, sitting him down roughly on the chair from the table and taking another, sitting directly in front of him with his deadly glare piercing his brother like daggers.
"No..."
Kyle watched as he blinked, his left eye twitching like every time he lied, the scowl only growing deeper as he moved closer, his eyes never leaving his.
"Dont you lie to me Shaun"
"Kyle-" Zayne had tried to intercept but he was cut off by Kyles hissing "Stay out of it! Shaun you need to tell me right this second"
Shaun was scared of what his brother would do to get that information, his obsession with their mother was finally getting to him, and the fact that Shaun lied about this for so long angered him more than anything. Vital things about his mother's disappearance that mattered more than life itself to Kyle. But Shaun had to eventually give in to the interrogation, parting his lips to speak.
"There was only one more thing, before I had a chance to leave...there was a feeling in the back of my head to turn around to it...and then your eyes and mouth appeared out of thin air-I couldn't hear you, when I tried confronting you about it you didnt know what I was talking about! I-"
Kyle had held his hand up and suddenly, his face changed, it was fearful as he snatched the black book up and opened the pages, seeing all but one of the pages had writing, that was fuzzy, glazed over with some sort of spell.
"Oh god..." he whispered, hovering his hand over it and muttering incoherent chants under his breath, over the course of a few seconds the writing was now readable.
"She's safe now, find the key, finish what I couldn't"
Kyle read over the words, putting two and two together as he realizes She meant Melia, his missing twin, which had zero memory off, he was much too young to remember her fully, but at least they knew she was safe, meaning she's likely alive.
"Find the key? what for?" Shaun asked "I'm more interested in Melia" "Who?" Shaun asked again.
"Our sister...my twin"
Everyone was silent, this information was a lot for everyone to take in, Kyle most of all. Shaun was still looking at Kyle with a worried glance, scared he would leave him, like they had left their grandparents. Shaun's biggest fear was losing everyone he knew, the effort his brother went through to bring him here was greatly appreciated and he didnt want to truly hide anything, but all this could've torn them apart for good.
But without warning, a flaming arrow shoots through the front window, striking into the wooden post next to Kyles head, he didnt flinch, but looked out the shattered window to see flames from torches emerging from the forest, the middle f the night was blacker than ever, and the torches painted the Reign hunters in a scary red glow, a few carrying bows aimed at the house with more fire arrows.
"Quickly, everyone outside!" Cara said over the noise of the fire working through the wood, she pulled the burning row from the wall as Kyle aims his hand to the growing fire.
"Influunt!"
A crystalline stream of water shoots from his palm, dousing the flames and keeping the fire wet and unable to burn. The rest of the Wolves left to go fight outside, they reach their barricades and hunker behind them as arrows fly their way, for whatever reason they weren't advancing on them, despite having swordsmen on hand just behind the archers.
Shaun goes to joint them but Kyle stops him.
"You're staying inside!"
"What? but I can fight?!"
"Its too risky, its you they want..." Kyle looks to the crossbow he saw leaning against the staircase, picking it up and passing it to Shaun "If you're that desperate to prove yourself then get in that window and cover us...you're a better shot than anyone else I know" Kyle says with a slight edge to it, leaving him to enter the fray.
Kyle was conflicted, he couldn't bare the idea of them actually kidnapping his brother, but he was also livid at his constant lies of late. Shaun knew this was the best he was going to get while his brother was mad at him, stomping upstairs with his crossbow and settling on the window ledged, perched and aiming at the archers, ready to let loose on any that tried to hurt anyone.
Meanwhile, Kyle was preparing a spell that would light the area up to see what they were going up against.
"Exardescere!"
He shot it up into the night sky, it was red and extremely bright, flinging through the night sky like a flare, and popping with a loud bang, the entire area surrounding the house was lit up and clearly shown that they were indeed surrounded, from back to front there were archers and fighters lined up on the perimeter of the forest, aiming and glowering at the Pollins home.
"What's the plan then?" Alyssa asked.
"They wont leave the forest because of the shield" Kyle clarified as Car looked at him confused.
"What shield?"
Kyle point up at the sky where Cara saw there was nothing there but a glitch of sorts, it was like the sky was moving jitterily, like there was an invisible dome around them.
"I put it up yesterday, they walk through it? Dead"
"Good job, but we cant wait for them to run out of arrows, we need an escape plan"
"That's going to be hard, its like they've created a wall around us"
When one arrow becomes too hard to dodge, Kyle rolls his eyes and extend his arms in front of him.
"Dispellere!"
The shield around them fades, the hunters noticing this waste no time in charging them, The family had already shifted to their wolf forms and were charging back at them, determination and anger in their eyes as they pounce and dodge around them. Shaun was loosing bolts into the archers trying to shoot the wolves from further away, hitting shoulders and necks with impressive skill, and Kyle was flinging spells left right and centre. Beautiful shades of purple fire and cutting spells that painted the battle field in spare hands, arms and legs, the battle brutal and unyielding.
"Venenati Ungues~" Kyle says as his nails grow larger and sharper, an acidic green substance dripping from them as he sprints through the tall grass, nipping people with his claws as they keel over into seizures and vomiting fits, poison spreads the field as he ran, The wolves working together expertly with each other to toy with their prey, ripping many hunters apart in the scuffle.
"Do you think its time yet?" Zayne asked telepathically to everyone as they all fight diligently.
"Not yet, they aren't in place!"
"Time for some herding Pack!" Adrian says as they begin to circle all the hunters into one place, Cara, Alyssa and Zayne all helping him as Kyle takes out any stragglers, Shaun peering down from his perch, his aim trained on the now smaller group of hunters all crowding together with their weapons drawn. The terrifying pack of huge wolves advancing slowly with fierce growls and snarls, making them shiver in fear.
"This is the best they can throw at us?"
"I wouldn't count our chickens yet..."
The group weren't backing down and were preparing a synchronised attack against the pack, but Kyle wasn't giving them any chance to attack, shooting long tendrils from his hands and wrapping the rest of the attackers in a tight bond, their struggling forms falling to the floor.
"They could be useful, lets keep them around for awhile" Kyle says out loud.
"I dont like the idea but...I suppose its a good enough one for now" Cara says, hesitant not to just kill them immediately.
"Come on, I'll put the shield back up, take them on inside..." Kyle looks up to where his brother was in the window, he had relaxed his posture and was leaning on the windowsill with a relieved look on his face "You ok?" Kyle asked him as he nodded back to him, a stupid grin on his face.
Kyle smiled back, but as he looked at his brother, the more he realised there was a shadow behind him, and it was moving ever closer to his unsuspecting person, Kyles eyes widen.
And everything in that moment, stopped.
