Chapter 24: Pit Stop

They broke into a hard run, heading back for the trucks. Sol clung to Felicity's back as her body moved through the trees in a blur. Adrenaline was an amazing thing, Sol was discovering. It cut through anything. The fear and fatigue peeled away to reveal flashes of anger in the other archons.

Perhaps, they too could sense their enemies closing in on them. Sol found he was still anchored to the forest at the place they had practiced earlier. It was like he had left a piece of himself behind there...

As he lost himself in the rhythmic gate of Felicity's stride, he found himself drawn back to that point. With each bound of her steps, he lost himself further in the hypnotic echo of the forest and its sounds. He had to brace himself against the waves of his power seducing him back to sleep. His tree form simply didn't have 'adrenaline' and he did not experience anxiety in the same way he did as a human. He couldn't rely on his tree-self to be as urgent in an emergency.
