Chapter 50

Joseph’s heart threatened to leap from his chest at any moment, the beats so rapid and fierce he could feel the pulsing in his fingertips. With each breath his chest ached and begged him to stop, blind spots developing within his eyes. The flame grew brighter in his dulled vision, the smoke sat darker on the horizon. It felt so long ago that he and Ivory marched those same steps through the winter only two months prior.

The bodies on the Irons’ estate were still warm as Joshua and Ivory cut each other’s hair at Joshua’s barn, crudely with dull blades which left both of their scalps red and raw. Ivory was crying and Joshua wanted to join her after watching the tears stream from her eyes for so long. The sun had just begun to set when Joshua finished digging a pit behind the barn, one he put Ivory’s clothes into and set ablaze, leaving her to adorn something a bit more…unflattering.
