The world was on a slow crawl to destruction because of the extinction of animals and plants due to pollution and overpopulation. Everyone knew it, but most were optimistic that humanity would be able to pull back from the edge before it was too late. Unfortunately, as time passed, it became more and more apparent that humanity was doomed. Mother nature herself started to fight back with natural disasters and rampant disease. it was like she was trying to kill the parasite that was humanity. Countries began to pour massive amounts of resources into research at universities and think tanks trying to find a long-term solution.
Finally, at a not so famous rural university, an idea was proposed. A professor there had theorized that the only way to save the planet was to remove humanity from the equation. Tear down the cities and let the Earth recover to her m9st natural state. Now, he wasn't advocating genocide but rather a relocation to VR environments and a worldwide regulation of birth rates to lower the population so that when humanity did emerge from VR, they would be at sustainable numbers. He figured that VR would allow people to have full lives with friends and family, but at the same time live in a very small space in reality. When he published his idea, it wasn't well received, but as time passed, it was slowly seen as the best option. Now, it was only a matter of time before humanity would enter seclusion and allow Earth to recover. The Earth Re-vitalization Project was beginning.
