At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

When I wake up, there is breakfast and a note on my end table.


The note reads, “Take good care of yourself today. I will see you at dusk in the arena. Eat it all and do your daily stretches.” Signed Cerulean.


I smile at the note before digging into the eggs and toast. Then tasting the crisp and juicy bacon. I almost wolf down the sourdough muffin but I have to pace myself.


I can’t contain how giddy I am to finally taste the breakfast made for the royal family.


Once I’ve finished, I gather my gear for the day and meet my father in the gardens. 


“We’ll leave from the fields today. I’ve arranged us a carriage so we can get more done.” 


I nod and the two of us depart to the beach. When we arrive, we rent out a boat with the money earned while working for the prince. 


“We’ll have to sell a lot if we want to make back our investment on those dive spots.” My father complains. 


The boat lurches as we step into it and put down all our gear.
