At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

Still shaken by the recent events, I convince Cerulean to take me to Serpent’s Way to walk through the town. 


It’s silent and windy, you can smell the sea even by the furthest house. 


The dry, laid bricks are already collecting the indebted footsteps of people and carriages.


“It’s strange no one is ever here,” I say. 


Cerulean wraps an arm around my waist and stops me from walking. 


“The streets are empty,” I say. My voice echoes through the dry air.


“The homes are not,” Cerulean says. He inclines his head towards an open window. A dark-eyed child watches us curiously but yelps when she notices she was spotted.


“So are you,” Cerulean quips. I roll my eyes and pull him along with me to the town square. 


“Do you think they’ll ever feel safe enough to come sit outside?”


“Maybe one day. I hope it’s someday soon.”
