King Arthur shook his head. “I can’t let you do it, Sam. Sir Agravain is a knight, and you are a tradesman. It is against the law for a commoner or tradesman to raise a hand against a nobleman. It is punishable by death.”
“But Lord,” I said. “Sir Agravain has been treating the commoners poorly, and he has threatened me several times. It is only a matter of time before an innocent person is hurt or dies at his hand. He has also dishonored me. I should have the right to accept his challenge.”
I had expected this and prepared for contingencies after Merlin had explained a few things about the local law. When I had chosen the weapons, fire, and sword, I thought of the fire that my blade produces when it moves through the air. I figured that Agravain would probably dip his weapon in a flammable media like pitch or naphtha and light it on fire. I was hoping he wouldn’t show up with a bow and fire arrows.
