Chapter 16

“Storm the castle?” Margot exclaimed an octave higher. “What castle? Is he lending you men at arms, archers, and pikemen?”

“No, none of that,” I replied. “I’m on my own. I’m not really planning on storming a castle. I will have to use other resources to accomplish my goal.” I scrunched my brows. “Have you ever heard of Baron Hugh Legrand?”

Margot’s eyes narrowed at the mention of the name. “I know who he is,” she replied with frosty anger. “Our families have been at war for three generations. This is why my father only brought three thousand men at arms to Arthur’s aid. Nevertheless, he felt it necessary to leave a strong contingent behind to guard his holdings.”

“I gathered as much from what your father told me.” I paused. “The baron said if I could figure a way to take Legrand’s castle, it would be mine by right of conquest. I would become the new baron, and Baron Hugh would be out on his ear or die in battle. Only then will your father give his blessing for us to wed.”
