Chapter 21

“The wizard is as good as dead,” Sir Kay said.

“I’m not so sure,” I replied. “If the griffin wanted him dead, why didn’t she just eat him?”

We were in Arthur’s Hall. I had come in and told him that I would go rescue Merlin, but he said no and immediately appointed me acting court wizard in the druid’s absence.

“I believe Sir Sam is right,” the king said. “My half-sister and Merlin have a long rivalry. She would want to imprison him and gloat.”

Guinevere chuckled. “Perhaps she just wants to play with him for a while. Morgan has a lusty appetite.”

It takes one to know one, I thought. “How long will Morgan keep the druid prisoner before she kills him?”

“That would depend on Merlin’s performance,” the queen purred, enjoying the topic. “Arthur could tell you more about his half-sister’s passions. Did you know that Mordred is Arthur’s son and nephew?”

Meow, I thought.
