Chapter 24

The water below decks had risen to chest level. The deck lurched to starboard at a dangerous angle — I feared capsizing. Then it tilted the other direction and then back again. It took me a moment to realize that we were beached. The sound of the surf was crashing hard against the ship and shore.

“Everyone grab a horse and lead it topside,” I shouted.

The horse ramp was still down, but the hatch above had been battened down for the storm. “Percival, come with me.” The knight didn’t hesitate. We ran up to the weather deck and pulled off the tarp and grating. The others were leading the horses from below a moment later.

The horses did not like the situation any more than we did. Being intelligent beasts, they nearly scooted down the sloping deck, leaped off into the surf, and splashed their way onto the beach.
