The castle was in chaos. People everywhere hurried on urgent business. Fletchers made arrows, cooks prepared hardtack and salt pork for the march, and wagons loaded with food, grain, and weapons rolled out to staging areas for the army.
We learned that Mordred’s army in Normandy was preparing to cross the English Channel. Arthur said that we, like Mordred, had one hundred thousand troops and would ride out to meet him at a place of his choosing. That place would be Camlann, which would later be known as Salisbury.
Merlin and I prepared hundreds of pounds of black powder, but I still took time to work in the smithy. Part of me wanted to create another sword like Excalibur, but the other part felt it would diminish my crowning achievement by no longer having a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Moreover, I didn’t have enough time. But, on the other hand, I had a good sword, which served me well, so I devoted my energies to something different.
