Chapter 31: The Reporter

Rory never went back to sleep. The woman who’d attempted to put her into a trance escorted her all the way back to her building. All the while, Rory tried to feign any awareness that she was indeed, not in a trance, that she was actually wide awake.

By the time they reached her apartment, dawn had risen, and the hallway was filled with a light gray light. As the woman unlocked her apartment using the same magic, she looked at Rory.

For a second, Rory feared the woman knew she had broken the trance. But then the woman spoke.

“We’ll be watching you for your own safety. If you notice any of us, or suspect you’re being followed, you’ll immediately forget that thought, and your sense of paranoia will be replaced with a sense of safety. Sleep well, Rory.”
