Chapter 33: Texas

Rafe thought about his own mother, the way she would've handled it if he'd done something like this. He was impressed with the way Lindi ensured they knew that she loved them. That having them was the best thing that had ever happened to her. Could a woman like this try to pawn off another man's child as his?

They pressed their lips together and crossed their arms. Lindi's shoulders sagged. Rafe thought about his anger all those years ago. He'd moved on, started a new career. Lindi had to give up her dream, had been hounded by the press, while he'd been cushioned from that by the basketball team. It happened during the weeks he was in hospital with his injured knee. He'd been too sorry for himself to focus on anything else. By the time he was released, his engagement and his basketball career were over, and the press had moved on to the next scandal. Where was their father? Didn't the man understand that you didn't abandon your responsibilities?
