Chapter 37: Proof

Melisende blinked. Better than equations? She couldn't fathom it.

He stepped toward her, then stopped. "Do you want the first knowing?" he asked, his voice and manner strangely formal. His face showed no emotion - only his eyes blazed red - but she was so attuned to him, she knew he feared she wasn't willing and he would never force himself upon her. She also knew that her answer meant everything to him. Strange how a few weeks ago she had been terrified of him and now she trusted him more than anyone. She had this sense that they belonged together. That even if they were flung to different places on the Earth, they would find each other. Sometimes, it almost felt as if he could read her mind.

Melisende stared up at the savage-looking being who had been kinder to her than anyone in her life and knew there was only one truthful answer. "Yes." She wanted him; her body throbbed with the need to feel his close to hers.
