"She's in shock."
The voice is distant, and though my eyes are about as wide as they can get, I see nothing in front of me, just some blurred objects moving around.
I haven’t released the fabric I grip to.
The warmth is reassuring. I'm cocooned.
I feel safe.
But another feeling teeters on the edge.
Rage?
Relief?
I can't tell.
My limbs are numb.
I feel a rumbling on my shoulder as another voice vibrates through me. I lean into the comfort of his voice, further against his body.
"Immortui."
The word makes no sense, but I don’t care for it.
"You said she'd be safe."
"She's always safe with me," the rumble lulls me.
"This can't be happening."
"I'm not running. I can't be away from her like I managed before; I won't survive it this time."
"She isn’t safe."
"I'll protect her!"
The voice makes me jump and the anger brushes harshly against my mind. I pull on the jacket.
A sigh and then,
"I'm sorry."
The arms encircle me tighter, pulling me even closer.
